HEAL OUR
The Philippine Nurses Association of America and the Philippine Nurses Association of America Foundation, Inc. initiated the COVID-19 Task Force with the goal of assessing the overall state and well-being of our members and the impact of the pandemic to our nursing profession and the public.
The task force gathered the lived experiences of our frontline staff from different regions and chapters. The overall feedback matched descriptions of individuals who experienced psychological trauma associated with loss of lives and feelings of helplessness. Some of our members reported exposure to COVID-19, being on quarantine and demands for and lack of personal protective equipment. Feelings of fear, uncertainty, pain of seeing fellow nurses/family members admitted in critical care units and grief are a common theme.
PNAAF President's Outgoing Message
I have been browsing on old Philippine Nurses Association of America (PNAA) convention and gala pictures, and they made me smile, wide eyes and gasps as I remembered some happy memories from 23 years of joining this prestigious, one and only Filipino nurses' organization in America. Looking back, I was an excited "newcomer," 53 years Old, three children, at my prime as a nurse-entrepreneur, looks pretty and smiling in pictures with my late husband Eddie, and wears high heels., and tagging along with past President Ampy dela Paz, who introduced me to PNAA as Board member of PNA Metro Houston, in Texas. Now, I am 76 very senior, widow, eight grandchildren, still an entrepre- still looking pretty and smiling, immediate past President of PNAA Foundation (PNAAF), from 2015 to June 2019 (two terms) and remained active paid member of PNAA and a committed PNAAF Council of Trustees.
My warm greetings of gratitude to both PNAA and PNAAF.
Merlita Velasquez
PNAAF President, 2017-2019
On July 1, 2020, at 7:30 AM, I met our group of 12 walkers/runners and a cheering squad of 4 PNANC members at the Pacifica Pier to embark on the 10 K Walk/Run fundraising event for the PNAAF’s leadership educational programs. Everyone was excited to be part of the first virtual 10 K Walk/Run endeavor, to enjoy the beautiful sunny weather and to savor the spectacular views of the ocean as we posed for our pictures and got ready to tackle the hills and the miles ahead. I insured that all came prepared to observe our Covid 19 precautions and we broke up into 3 groups so that we could maintain our social distance. Our cheering squad came with bottles of water to hand out both at the start of the walk and at Linda Mar Beach.

Excitement was apparent in everyone’s face as we entered the beautiful and spacious lobby of Hyatt Regency Hotel at the Hudson River in New Jersey! It was July 24, 2018 when delegates from all over the US started to arrive for the Annual Convention. Many see each other only once a year and so the scene was like a homecoming event with hugs, kisses, laughter, etc.
On July 25, the President, Dino Doliente III convened his Executive Board with PNAAF President Merlita Velasquez and Executive Director, Annie Vista. This was his last administration meeting and final reports were presented by the Officers and Committee Chairs.
